About
Since 1984, local emergency food providers have worked together to coordinate services in the struggle against hunger.
Seattle Food Committee (SFC) members represent food programs serving those in need of supplemental food in Seattle. SFC works with food distributors and other service providers to coordinate and maximize the efficiency of Seattle’s emergency food system.
Here’s how:
- Combine resources for greater buying power.
- Inform the public and media on hunger issues and local assistance programs.
- Share information and experience to run food programs more efficiently.
- Educate local and state officials to garner support for emergency food programs and their needs.
- Organize skill-building trainings and workshops
- Increase emergency preparedness
- Advocacy - Build community awareness and promote staff, volunteer, and customer/member participation in the legislative process regarding hunger and anti-poverty issues.
- Community Resources - Pursue the enhancement of the capabilities of food banks to provide resources to the communities they serve. These resources and strategies promoted should help the food banks and their clients end hunger by shortening the line and promoting self-sufficiency as defined by the client.
- Education & Training - Educate members on increasing access to equitable resources and ensuring that members have comparable access to basic education and materials relevant to SFC membership and basic food banking procedures.
- Nutritious Food Sourcing - Source nutritious food in a way that supports food producers in the local economy who practice environmentally sustainable farming and fair labor.
- Operations - Pursue operational best practices of member food pantries. This includes, but is not limited to, emergency preparedness and transportation obligations.
